Reiki

What is Reiki?

The practice of Reiki is an original method of healing, developed by Micao Usui in Japan in the early 20th Century. The energy is channelled through the practitioner which enters at the crown chakra and passes to the patient through their hands. The Japanese word Reiki translates as 'Universal Life Energy'. Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this energy which flows through all living things and is vital to our health and wellbeing; known as 'ki' in Japan, 'chi' in China and 'prana' in India. Acupuncture, Tai Chi and Yoga are also based on the free-flow of this life energy.

What are the benefits of Reiki?

Reiki helps to support and promote the natural healing process by increasing the flow of life energy through our physical and subtle bodies, (our energetic layers also known as the Aura), bringing balance on all levels.

Stress and anxiety can have a huge impact on our health and wellbeing. It can not only manifest into physical illness but can also have a negative effect on our state of mind, often leading us to make unhealthy and unproductive life choices.

Reiki is a deeply relaxing therapy that can help to reduce stress and release tension in the body, promoting a calm, peaceful sense of wellbeing on all levels. It can help us to cope better with the situation in hand and encourage us to make better, more positive choices.

Its gentle energy can be used to help with any condition and may be used safely by people of all ages, mothers to be, surgical patients and the elderly. It can even be used to help animals, plant life and the planet.

What happens during a treatment?

A treatment is usually carried out with the recipient lying in a comfortable position on a treatment couch but can also be given in a seated position. There is no need to remove any clothing apart from shoes as Reiki can pass easily through materials, including plaster casts, and can also be given over a distance.

The practitioner places their hands gently on or above the body in different areas for several minutes at a time. Reiki may be experienced as a flow of energy, mild tingling, warmth, coolness, other sensations or sometimes nothing at all.

Your session will begin with a short case history prior to discussing treatment options. A treatment plan will be discussed and agreed with you, and reviewed as necessary. This will always be subject to your own preferences, and can be changed at any time in line with progress.

What happens after a treatment?

After your treatment you will be given simple aftercare instructions that you will need to follow in order to maximise the benefit of your treatment, such as resting and avoiding toxins.

As well as feeling deeply relaxed and uplifted, some people may find that their symptoms worsen slightly for a short time or they may experience other symptoms such as feeling emotional or tired. This is completely normal and is a sign that the body is bringing itself back into balance and is trying to eliminate toxins and waste product. This will not usually last longer than 24 hours.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments you will require will depend on your individual needs and lifestyle. A single treatment may be given for general relaxation; however a course of treatments may be required in order to help aid recovery from an injury or to improve a condition or illness. Long-term conditions may require on-going treatments in order to help manage symptoms. A course of treatments are usually taken with two to four weeks between each session.  I will suggest a suitable number of sessions depending on your needs and this can be reviewed and changed in line with progress. You are free to discontinue treatments at any time; ultimately you are responsible for your own health and wellbeing and following the advice of any health professional is at your own discretion.

It it is important to understand that healing is a process that requires time and a willingness to work on oneself outside of the therapy room. Any healing given can only hold long term benefits alongside a positive mindset and healthy lifestyle choices.

Please be advised that although Reiki is a very powerful healing aid, it should only be used in complement to your doctor’s advice and treatment. It should never be relied on solely as a treatment and you should always first seek medical advice from your GP if you feel unwell in any way.
